Overview

ixo is a new operating system for the Impact Economy. It enables anyone to collect, measure, evaluate, value, and tokenize verified impact data.

View my case study, Blockchain case study: ixo — the new world of impact for context.

Objective: create a mobile claim submission tool

Service Providers deliver the impact to an ixo project. They are the people on the ground submitting claims and making a difference e.g. planting trees or delivering books.

The app will enable Service Providers to cryptographically sign claims to deliver the impact to a project.

Research

Discovery

I interviewed existing Service Providers within the ixo network to discuss challenges in their various situations.

Key findings:

  • Lengthy mobile form fields are a pain point.
  • Many projects will be located where connectivity is limited. In the case of Amply, data is a valuable asset in townships and auto-claim submission could be costly.
  • The majority of Service Providers use lower-end mobile devices. UI, transitions and loading times should be minimised to assist performance.
  • Battery efficiency is critical. Apart from processing tweaks, we adopted a darker UI to assist in screen brightness while also reducing eye strain.

Design process

I began the design process by drawing, wireframing and prototyping solutions to challenging features such as Web3 onboarding, seamless capturing of important claim information, and offline capabilities.

Onboarding

To onboard, existing Service Providers scan the Keysafe QR code to instantly load their ongoing projects and claims.

The ixo Keysafe is a secure identity vault that stores your identity with public and private keys. It allows you to manage your profile and cryptographically sign transactions on ixo projects.

Projects

The home screen shows your activity progress on projects. Project claims are divided between saved and submitted.

The offline feature enables the Service Provider can manage their claims and submit them later when connected to wifi.

Claims

Make your impact. Submit claims of what you have done.

Lengthy claim forms were minimised with pre-populated fields based on the Keysafe and metadata collected from uploaded media.

Reflection

What made the project challenging

  • Blocked QR scanning feature from App Store: detailed specifications had to be submitted to the App Store for feature approval. We received approval after a month of negotiations.
  • Collaboration with the marketing team to communicate and educate users on new and unusual Web3 UX patterns and practices.
  • Completing claims in areas with little to no connectivity.
  • Iterative claim form design process to create the ideal experience
  • Older device support.

What made the project cool

  • 👍 Instant mobile onboarding process by scanning your ixo Keysafe QR code.
  • 👏 Created a user-friendly claim tool that works in unique environments.
  • ❤️ Collaborating with Service Providers from projects across the globe such as the reforestation project in Madagascar and the early childhood development project, Amply.
  • 🦸 Targeted user testing: A Telegram channel was created for interested customers that are willing to assist with testing. This provided us with valuable feedback to iterate rapidly on bugs and UX improvements.

The ixo mobile app is available for download on the App Store and Google Play.
